Why Export To Colombia?

Well, I imagine that your company would be happy to export anywhere they could make a profit, right? Well, Colombia´s having a boom economy right now, the best in 30 years some say . . . and I bet there is money to be made with the right product.

Quite a few people I know personally have set up import businesses and are primarily bringing clothing and other products from China. I expect the economy to hold up for another year at least so long as there is no major change in the Bank of the Republics money policies. Their discount rate is about 9.5% right now and may continue to rise as there are some slight inflation worries. However, as the USD continues to fall in general terms worldwide it also makes imports into Colombia more accesible to the public.

I would think it interesting to consider looking for a partner to purchase your exports now as it is doubtful if the strength in the economy will hold up for more than a couple of years, unless that is the US dollar stays exceptionally weak after such a period of time.

Business in Colombia: The Caribbean Coast

No doubt about it, 2007 has been one of the best years in the last decade if not more for Colombia and Colombian business. The stock market is booming, major companies have been bought out by overseas investors, the guerrilla seems to be on the run and the popularity of President Uribe seems to only continue to rise.

One of the new areas of opportunity for investors given this change in the outlook for Colombia is a possible boom in tourism and also the creation of investment properties initially along the Caribbean coast. The cities that have benefited most from this are Cartagena and Santa Marta. However, it seems to me that the prices now being asked for for some of the properties in Cartagena are just ludicrous. I have seen this happen in many different businesses here. So if you do decide to invest in Colombia be aware that the locals have generally little knowledge of international prices and as such tend to ask too much while generally believing that it will be paid! So if you find someone too intransigent to negotiate, I recommend looking around for a better deal.

One of the cities that has grown most, though in my opinion is not the prettiest, is Barranquilla. It is more of an industrial town situated on the delta of the Magdalena river, and a few kilometers from the actual coast. However, given that it also has a free trade zone it will surely continue to grow its industrial base.

Money Transfers (“Remesas”) to or from Colombia

One of Colombia´s biggest business´which ranks right up there with its petroleum exporting capacity is “remesas” or wire transfers: to Colombia that is.

So if you are thinking of a business opportunity this may be it.

Having said that there are already a number of established companies here in Colombia . . . what would be best would be to find out where there are mostly colombians (probably in teh US or Canada) and see if there are enough money sending (wire transfer) facilities in their area. which suitably serve their needs. You could probably then open your western union franchise….
